So last year we adopted Cami. She resided in China the first 9 1/2 months of her life. We can therefore assume she heard Mandarin and only Mandarin for the duration of her Chinese residency. She has now been home almost a year.
Yesterday, at age 21 months, she reaches into a kitchen drawer and says "Give me a spoon." A complete sentence.
I about fell flat on my face from the shock. You see, our native English speaking male offspring did not speak until age 2 (Collin) and age 3 (Evan). One was tested for speech therapy, didn't qualify, and started speaking the very next week after the testing. The other just completed two years of speech therapy and has now tested out of the program.
So, for me to hear a one year old using complete sentences, with proper pronunciation to boot, about bowls me over. I mean, to hear such a little person speaking in such a manner is mind-blowing. I'd be happy just hearing "Spoon!" or "Soon!" (for spoon) with a little finger pointing at the desired object. The boys at this age would have pointed to the spoon and shrieked "Eh! EH! EHHHHH!!!!" until they got what they wanted.
Hmmm. Guess we won't need to get this one tested for speech.
